Service Children Conference

On Friday 4 October, nine Year 7 Catmose students attended a conference entitled Gathering the Voice of Children and Young People from Service Families in our Schools. The event, hosted by Rutland County Council and held at Greetham Valley, was for pupils from Service families and the aim of the day was to gather the views of those Service pupils.

The event enabled Service pupils, from a range of schools across Rutland, to meet with their peers and to consider a range questions including:

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a ‘Service child’?
  • What do schools do well to celebrate and support Service children?
  • What would the ideal learning/school experience be like to ensure all Service children are successful and happy in school?
  • What are the main issues/challenges for Service children in schools and how can they be overcome?

It was a fun day for all concerned, with the Catmose students fully engaging themselves with the debates and activities. Their input will go to help the County Council support schools in meeting the needs of our Service pupils.
